Canadian Labor 21.3: Birthdays!

We have breakfast with Opa again this morning. Each day he seems to get a little more talkative, and today would end up being no different. I can’t say that he’s in the best of moods but as Oma points out, all he can see is that which he cannot do, not that which he can. This is human nature, in a lot of respects. We lazily talk away the morning then head out to play with the dog. We assume that the rain overnight plus the forecast for today will make the day a 0 in terms of being outside.

Bear cannot get enough of this game

Philippe asks us if we want to ride as there seems to be a window of opportunity, so D, Simon, and myself decide to join and we start at the info center yet again. Simon went with the qualification that we not go too long, so we plan an hour and opt not to do the most difficult trails. Once again Philippe puts together a good loop, and we hit a bunch of stuff we did not hit the day before.

Eyeing up that drop. Today I will say…nope!
The long approach
D & Philippe plan out the rest of the ride

With about 3 minutes left in the ride, the skies open up and the rain comes down. In all the timing was just about perfect. We roll to the car and pack up and call it a day.

In all we did just over 7 miles in just under an hour. The Strava link can be found here.

We head back to the cottage for lunch then jump in the hot tub to warm up. The day is cooler than anything we have experienced at home, and the warm hot tub feels good.

From bike to hot tub!

We shower then head to the food store as well as hitting a few retail places in search of a present for D’s dad, whose birthday is tomorrow. In all it is a successful trip, and it allows us some down time to just hang out and talk about whatever.

The selection on NA beers was impressive

Back to the cottage to hang out some more, and Theo & Gael show up for the dinner tonight. Theo is now firmly a young man and not a kid anymore. That said, the 15-year-old Zac is the tallest one in this clan. It’s a tall bunch, to be sure.

The 3 generations all together

Sophie & Charles who are friends of the family then come over. I imagine the last time we saw them was at the holiday in 2019. While they are living in NY now, we only see them in Canada somehow. Sophie and her sister are actually 1 day older than me, and we all turn 50 this year. That fact has nothing to do with anything but it did come up in conversation today.

Hanging outside with Charles & Sophie

Dinner is steak with poutine from down the street. The steak was made here and was amazing. The poutine was also top-notch. After dinner we have a birthday cake for Opa and Adri which was also excellent.

Birthday dinner time

We take the dog for a walk to end the evening, and it’s a pretty nice evening out. I am not sure we will get as many stars tonight as the first night. But it’s nice to look at either way. The cottage photographs well at this time of night.

A nice setting sun
On the way back the fog started to engulf the cottage

Back home and the kids are playing Dungeons & Dragons again, but now they have drawn Adri & Oli into the mix as well. We chill out in the room for the rest of the night as we need to keep the dogs separated and we keep Bear company up here with us.
