The Last 23-24 Ski Weekend in Vermont 2 – Killington

We wake up to a lot of snow. The forecast is in the 16-20″ ballpark and when we wake up, we’re certainly off to a good start. Could be a banner day today.

We have breakfast then get ready for a day at Killington. We have no idea what to expect. With this much snow on a Saturday I can only imagine it will be a lot of people trying to make the most of the spring explosion of powder. We’re heading out either way.

The roads are not especially clear but the Subaru is good in the snow. It’s probably a bit better than the truck due to its more manageable weight.

We park in the lower gondola, the Skyship, because it looked like a bit of a shit show going up the main road. The lot is jam-packed, with more people than we have ever seen there. That said, the day would be pretty sparse on the slopes, with almost no lift lines of note.

In all we probably ended up with 18″ on the day. While this is a pretty awesome turn out, a lot if the people don’t know what to do with this and without any groomed runs, I think a lot of people were in over their heads today.

It’s an interesting mix, getting this much snow in the east. All the trails were nothing bit moguls, some bigger than others. If you were learning to ski today, it would probably be nothing short of miserable. It’s a challenge for me at this stage, and even Simon said at the end that he was hoping for some groomed stuff to take a break.

There were no green runs left, and barely any blue runs in the traditional east coast sense. In the west, we got this much snow several times but there is so much more terrain it doesn’t all get tracked out the same way. It’s different, for sure. But for this side of the country it was pretty awesome.

And a hell of a workout. By the end we were all cooked. The run down to the car was painfully slow & difficult.

We head back to the apartment and are met with a driveway full of snow. We dig it out, then head in to shower up and take a moment, then figure out dinner.

We had wanted to go to Brix Bistro but the chef didn’t show. I called the owner and he said he felt bad making him come to work so there would be no food today. We end up at West Street Grille and eat there. Simon & I get burgers and it is solid, well-deserved on the day. We also play Wavelength which is a pretty fun game.

We head back to the apartment to hang out and relax. It was a hell of a day.
