Canadian Labor 21.1: North We Go

This year’s Labor Day plan is something we have not been able to do in quite some time. After nearly 2 years, we are setting our sights north of the border and making our way to the cottage. The kids have off Tuesday and we both took the day off, so the normal 3-day weekend will be a 4-day, and with the border open to all of us, it’s time to set sail and see how the crew is doing up north.

I start the day by working, first at home then in the car. I have a few calls then I need to take care of some stuff, but by 1:00 I am done for the day. I passenger for the first 4 hours with most of that being taken up by work. The drive does go faster when you work, but it’s not the most comfortable position to be in.

We lost our dog sitter for the weekend when a tree fell on my parents house, so the little furry guy was along for the ride this time. Since we’re going to the country, it’ll be a lot better for him. He went for his longest drive ever today.

Bear excitedly waits, and waits, and waits, for us to arrive

The day was gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous. As much as it would have been nice to be outside doing outdoor things, driving on a day like today is far better than heavy rain, or snow. I have done this drive in the snow and it sucks. Today was a breeze.

We stop for gas, then Panera for lunch after which I took the wheel, then gas & tea once more before the border.

87 is not my favorite road but it was very easy to enjoy this weather

The border was easy as you can get. There were 2 cars ahead of us and it took them 10 minutes to clear out. When we got to the gate, the agent was about as cool as they come. Super friendly guy and he didn’t even make Simon take another Covid test, even though he is under 12 and not yet vaccinated.

Shortly after the border we go through Montreal, getting a quick glimpse of the city.

Montreal, briefly

At this point the traffic picks up, which is pretty par for the course in Montreal on a Friday evening. The last 2 hours of the drive lags, but the sky never gets any less awesome.

The sky just keeps getting better

We get there by 8, and all go in to say hi to Opa, who is doing great. He just got out of the rehab center yesterday and he is looking really good. Dinner is salmon and some other stuff. Pretty light meal as they are cooking out of these meal packs lately. Tasty food and always something different.

Finally, the cottage

After dinner I take Bear for a walk down the road without a leash. He loves being out here because he has so much freedom. He’s a good pup and he never goes far. But being black, the little guy is really hard to see when the sun goes down.

A bit later we go out again but this time with D. It is pitch black and you can see every star in the world tonight. You can even see the Milky Way which is nothing short of truly awesome. An amazing night out, splendid temperatures, beautiful sky. Just a great night to be out for a walk.

And here we are, back at the cottage, after being away for almost 21 months. It’s been a crazy world this past year and a half.
