23 & Sedona 2 – Mescal

We’re up at 5:30, this partly in an effort to keep east coast time, and partly because we were asleep by 9:30 last night. It’s a good night of sleep but not great. My neck is tight for no good reason. I add CBD cream and start the day with a cup of coffee as usual.

I finish prepping the bikes and inflate the tires. I take them for a spin in the lot and they seem good. So we’re good to go and out the door by 9:00.

We do a version of the loop we did on day 1 last time we were here. It includes Chuckwagon, Mescal, Aerie, then some other trails that were less remarkable. These are the keys in the Dry Canyon area and we hit them all.

Today is the 1st day of our 2nd trip ever to Sedona. In all, we’ve now ridden here 4 times. To call me a veteran of this place would be a gross overstatement. Still, I think you could argue that Mescal represents one of the cornerstone trails you come for. Not only do you get the terrain but you get the amazing scenery. I feel if you don’t do this trail when you’re out here, you’ve done yourself a bit of a disservice. So obviously, it needed to be part of our day 1 loop. In all we did 15+ miles and it was a great start to the week. And as you can see, the views were fabulous.

By the end of the ride, D is cooked.

Back to the condo and we hop in the pool then the hot tub. We meet a guy from Wisconsin and talk to him for a bit before he needs to go and join a wine tasting. We wrap up shortly after and get dressed and head out.

We stop at Thunder Mountain Bike shop to buy a few things and talk to the people there. Then we drive around town a bit before heading to Safeway to grab some dinner materials.

We go back to the condo and D makes dinner, a salad with shrimp on top. It’s excellent and like 1/10 the cost of eating the mediocre food here. Solid meal, and more relaxing to eat in.

After dinner I clean up the bike drivetrains because mine was a total mess. I need to be sure to clean the lube off before we ride because it’s incredibly dry here and my whole drivetrain was red by the end of the ride.
