Julia’s DC Birthday 22-414: DC Arrival

The Setup

For Julia’s birthday this year, we planned a 3-day getaway to Washington DC. I had offered her a choice of where to go, and this is what she picked. I wanted it to be drive-able, and not need a car. It worked out that this was a good distance and it allowed us to be back on her actual birthday so she could go see her mom. We had no firm plans, other than the hotel we were staying at. Everything else would fall into place from there.

The Plan

The plan for day 1 was to head down to DC after school, get to the hotel, grab dinner, then see what the day looked like. Pretty loosey goosey.

Drive

The drive was reasonable, which is always a bonus. Anything in or around DC often sucks, but we were able to escape anything too bad. I don’t remember much in the way of traffic.

Hotel

We drove directly to the hotel to get ourselves setup from the door. I checked in, and thankfully they offered parking underneath. It was so easy that it’s hard to believe. We got our room and put our stuff in it. This would be our base for just 2 nights, 3 days, Thursday through Saturday.

The hotel was the Morrison-Clark Inn & Restaurant, a presumably somewhat historic place. It was nice, easy to get to, and totally reasonable in terms of cost. A good start.

Dinner

Dinner was in the hotel, which had gotten decent reviews so we tried it. There were only a few other guests in there through our meal, but the food was decent. It seems they keep the kitchen staff there just to keep some level of quality for the overall experience. Clearly they were not making money on the number of guests, but the food wasn’t terrible. Perhaps a bit pricey but that’s ok. This is her birthday trip so I wanted her to enjoy it.

The meal was as pictured below.

Walking DC

After dinner we set out and walked around the White House. It was an amazingly beautiful night as you can see from the pictures below. We took in a bunch and snagged a bunch of pics. See below for photo dump.

Recap

In all I think this was a solidly successful day 1 of the trip. An easy drive, a decent meal, and a great night to walk the city.
