Sedona 5: Day Trip to the Grand Canyon

Sleep is poor again. D is sick and when either of us is sick neither of us sleeps well. But we’re in Sedona, so what are you gonna do? Today is a little bit different than the previous 3 days which we’ll get to below. But first, we’re up & out the door by 7:00 to grab some breakfast at the Red Rock Cafe. Google review below:

Food was fresh and tasty, reasonable price for this town. Service was super fast and the overall experience was great. Went here on a recommendation and would go back again for sure.

Breakfast started with a bang
A HUGE bang!

After breakfast we take a drive into town to check out the fabled “millionaire’s row” which is a nice enough view, but honestly after being in this, it’s not really that amazing. Plus when you compare the picture below with the rest of this post, it pales in comparison.

We then hit up Firecreek Coffee. Google review here:

It was fine. I don’t know, the bean I got for the espresso were nothing great. I think they lacked much flavor and had a slightly over-roasted taste. It may have been an iffy batch but it was less than stellar. It’s a nice little shop but they could tighten up that cup a bit.

Firecreek Coffee gave us a quick stop

Back to the condo we meet up with Jim and hop in the car for a day trip to the Grand Canyon. The drive up is scenic for a while, then interesting in that the landscape here is different than what we’re used to. In an hour we go from scenic Sedona to mundane route 40 Arizona.

Once we get there we take a small hike to Shoshone Point. I’m not gonna waste words here. Just look at the pics.

After the out & back we drive to a few more points, and along on the way we see elk crossing the road a few times. This is the best picture I was able to get of one.

At the visitor center we grab another magnet and get something to eat. The food is as you would expect in a tourist spot.

After lunch we drive over to the Desert View Tower, which is a 40 minute drive from where we ate and sits on the other side of the canyon, to the east giving you that desert view.

And then we drive home.

On the way back we decide to hit up the airport mesa overlook again, this time to watch the sun set. We’re just shy of an Elton John concert level of people here. It’s nice, but you know, with all these people…

Almost a concert at sunset
And the sun goes down
Most people focus on the rocks & the sun’s effect on them

On the way out we humor Alex and climb the Summit trail to go to one of the vortexes. None of us feel any power flowing up from the earth. But it’s a nice view nonetheless.

For dinner we go to the J Wine Bistro. Google review here:

I give this 5 stars on food alone. It was outstanding and that is all there is to say. The staff was great. The chef/owner came to talk to us which was nice. Absolutely fantastic. However…this is not a $$ restaurant. This is $$$ even by Sedona standards. The listing we saw was “less than $30” but when we got there the prices were well beyond that. The default is a fixed price 4 course meal in the $65-$95 range with the option to opt-out of courses you don’t want. Menu was limited but that’s ok as the selection was fine and the quality was top-notch. I don’t want to say not to go here but be warned, it’s not cheap.

Soup
Salad
And fish

Back to the condo to pack and hang briefly before everyone is off to bed. Tomorrow we leave this beautiful landscape and return to the dull gray of New Jersey. Even though it was a short trip it was jam-packed with excellence.
